Philadelphia resident, Tyrone Wise, aged 34, has been given a five-year prison sentence on Tuesday following a guilty plea for arson. The sentencing came after Wise admitted to setting fire to the SunRay Drugs Pharmacy during the civil unrest in West Philadelphia on May 31, 2020. U.S. District Court Judge Timothy J. Savage handed down the sentence which also includes three years of supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Tyrone Wise set a fire that caused $1.2 million in damage, affecting a store, apartments above, and the local community. His actions led to the permanent closure of the pharmacy. U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero stated, "Tyrone Wise’s actions were incredibly dangerous," as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
In September, Wise pleaded guilty to setting fire to a building used in interstate commerce, a crime investigated by the ATF and Philadelphia Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Jayne handled the case, while ATF agent Eric DeGree stated that "Tyrone Wise took advantage of the lawlessness of the moment to torch this drug store and extensively damage people’s apartments for no reason," as stated by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
