Philadelphia police have reportedly recovered a white Jeep Grand Cherokee believed to be linked to the shooting death of 17-year-old Noah Scurry, a junior at Samuel Fels High School. The Jeep, located in a city impound lot, matches the description of the vehicle seen fleeing the murder scene on the 5000 block of Rorer Street, as detailed by FOX 29. Scurry was preparing to head to school with his mother when he was shot multiple times in what investigators believe was a targeted attack.
Details obtained by CBS News Philadelphia indicate that surveillance footage captured a white Jeep parallel parking in an alley moments before the shooting, and later departing from the scene. Following their discovery in the Summerdale section near Summerdale and Godfrey, investigators were seen searching the area closely, as reported by 6abc Action News.
The tragedy of Scurry's death resonates within the school community as he was not only a student with a bright future but also the basketball team's highest scorer on the SAT and served as a team captain. "It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you of the passing of one of our students whose life was tragically taken this morning," Samuel Fels High School Principal Melissa Rasper shared in a letter to the school community, as FOX 29 detailed. The School District of Philadelphia has made grief counseling available to students and staff affected by this incident.
In a statement obtained by CBS News Philadelphia, School District spokesperson Monique Braxton expressed the profound impact of the young student's untimely death on the community, "The principal, coach, players, classmates, peers, are distraught," Monique Braxton, a spokesperson for the School District of Philadelphia, said Tuesday. "This is unimaginable for them. The student was getting in the car with his mom this morning in the back of his home, and he was shot and killed." Colwin Williams, an anti-gun violence advocate, shared concern for the traumatic effects on classmates and family, emphasizing the depth of the tragedy for those who knew the young athlete.
As the investigation continues, police have not yet released information about suspects, nor have they determined a concrete motive for the attack. Anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to contact the authorities by calling or texting 215-686-TIPS (8477).
