After parting ways with Jim Curtin in November, the Union tapped Carnell to helm the team forward. The 47-year-old Johannesburg native has been tasked to not only elevate the playing style but also to work closely with the Union's development of young talent. Carnell is expected to, as outlined by Ernst Tanner, Philadelphia Union's Sporting Director, "bring a clear sporting philosophy that elevates the team and delivers a competitive season." Carnell arrives with an impressive resume, including a prior stint as the New York Red Bulls' interim manager and an assistant coach for Canada’s men's national team in 2024.
The Union's sporting director highlighted Carnell's balanced approach and compatibility with the club's ethos. To Reuters, Tanner said, "With knowledge of both MLS and international markets, he is tactically astute and aligned with our sporting strategy." Carnell succeeds Curtin, who despite his dismissal, guided the team to an MLS Cup final appearance in 2022 and won the MLS Coach of the Year award twice.
