Residents of a local Pierce County neighborhood were jarred by a surprising intrusion when a suspect entered a garage, causing homeowners to seek refuge and contact authorities. According to a Pierce County Sheriff's Department, a call was placed on January 14th after homeowners heard a loud "smash" and footsteps within their garage, leading them to believe they might be in immediate danger.
Responding swiftly, deputies arrived at the scene and noted the unsettling sounds of a stranger rummaging through the garage. Initially unresponsive to the deputies' commands, the suspect began to comply only when one quick-thinking deputy addressed him in Spanish. The officers subsequently detained the male suspect, discovering a screwdriver and bolt cutters in his possession, tools associated with burglary. After hearing from the garage, deputies found a male suspect as they opened the door.
The homeowners, still sequestered in their house, confirmed that they did not know the individual or his intentions. At the culmination of the incident, the suspect was transported to Pierce County Jail and charged with one count of Residential Burglary.
While recognizing the terrifying ordeal for the homeowners, the Sheriff's Department praised the actions of all involved. "Great job to the homeowner who didn’t hesitate to call 911 and outstanding job to the deputy who recognized Spanish was needed," they asserted in their statement. The suspect, equipped with burglary tools found by deputies, is now facing legal repercussions for his actions.
