As the chill of winter deepens its grip on North Texas, Plano's response to the plunging temperatures remains steadfast and humane. The Plano Texas Police Department announced on social media that the city's overnight warming stations, deemed Plano Overnight Warming Stations (POWS), are operational again tonight, providing a crucial lifeline for those needing shelter from the life-threatening cold.

The activation of POWS kicks in when forecasts call for temperatures to drop to 32 degrees or below, or to hover at 40 degrees with at least a 50% chance of precipitation, the current forecast aligns with such conditions. These warming stations provide a respite from the cold and offer food, drink, and a range of supplies to help combat the chill. For individuals and families who lack the means to weather the biting cold indoors, this initiative serves as a short-term emergency housing solution. The POWS is located at EPIC, with its address as 4700 14th Street in Plano.

Access to the warming stations is facilitated by shuttles running from the DART (Parker Road) Station between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Doors to the POWS open at 6 p.m. and close at 10 p.m. Those who miss the shuttle service window or seek shelter past 9:30 p.m. must find alternative transportation, as entry is not permitted past 10:00 p.m. unless accompanied by the Plano Police or Fire-Rescue personnel. The police department also notes a restriction for shuttle use, specifically a three-bag limit and the exclusion of animals from the service. However, they provide a compassionate solution for pet owners – Plano Animal Shelter will accommodate pets at no charge for the night.
