A Queens woman has been charged and arraigned following a fatal hit-and-run incident in Plainview, Long Island. Authorities charged 39-year-old Veronica Marmol with leaving the scene of an incident resulting in death, according to Nassau County police.Yesterday evening around 5:55 p.m., Marmol allegedly struck Kevin Lawry, a 38-year-old man who was crossing Old Country Road, and then fled without stopping.
The collision, occurring near the intersection of Old Country Road and Floral Avenue, left Lawry with serious injuries that proved fatal at the scene. The FOX 5 New York reported that Marmol continued eastbound after the incident in her 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The victim, identified by prosecutors during the arraignment, was reportedly accompanied by a friend when the vehicle hit him.
Following the arraignment, details emerged suggesting that Lawry was thrown onto the hood of the car upon impact. He died at the location and prosecutors say Marmol was discovered about two miles from the crash site. News 12 Long Island informed that during court proceedings, the prosecution mentioned Marmol admitting to being involved in a crash and leaving the scene because she was scared.
Marmol's history includes nine prior convictions related to driving offenses, such as operating without a license and aggravated operation of a motor vehicle, as stated by prosecutors. Despite the prosecutor's assertions, Marmol's defense contended the incident was simply an unfortunate accident and emphasized her cooperation with the police investigating the matter. They cited a dangerous intersection as a contributing factor to the collision. The judge set the bail at $75,000 cash or $150,000 bond.
Both the victim's and the defendant's family and friends kept their silence when approached by News 12 Long Island. Marmol is expected to return to court on January 6.
