David Zandstra, an 84-year-old retired minister from Georgia, was found not guilty in the 1975 killing of 8-year-old Gretchen Harrington. The jury reached its decision after a brief one-hour deliberation following a four-day trial. Zandstra had been charged with kidnapping and killing Gretchen, who disappeared on her way to Bible camp. Her remains were found two months later in Ridley Creek State Park, Pennsylvania, as reported by FOX 29 News.
According to NBC Philadelphia, Zandstra was arrested and charged in July 2023 after a reported confession. His lawyer, Mark Much, argued that the confession was coerced and that there was no physical evidence connecting Zandstra to the crime. Much also noted that other suspects were investigated during the original investigation.
David Zandstra was charged in connection with the 1975 disappearance of Michelle Harrington, but he was acquitted after maintaining his innocence for nearly 50 years. His defense attorney, Christopher Boggs, stated, "David Zandstra maintained his innocence for 48 years and as Mr. Much said in his closing, he maintained his innocence for most of his interview, and he maintains his innocence to this day." Despite the verdict, the Harrington family still lacks closure. Boggs expressed sympathy, saying, "Our hearts along with all of Delaware County still break for the Harrington family who deserve an end to the nightmare of losing a family member," as stated by 6abc.
