The quiet of Rolesville's Main Street Park was disrupted last month when individuals vandalized the George Taylor Memorial, a solemn site honoring the memory of an African American man lynched in 1918. According to local authorities, the incident occurred on December 17, 2024, and was immediately reported to the Rolesville Police Department. Upon their arrival, officers discovered the memorial sign and its supporting pole had been forcibly knocked to the ground, apparently by a vehicle.
In response to the incident, the police are actively seeking the responsible party. The damage to the memorial has been rectified with a replacement of the marker, and to deter future acts of vandalism, security cameras have now been installed throughout the area. These updates were implemented swiftly following the destruction of a historical marker that serves as a critical reminder of the county's past atrocities.
The George Taylor Memorial was first unveiled on September 7, 2024, through a collaboration between the Wake County Remembrance Community Coalition, the Town of Rolesville, and the Equal Justice Initiative. Its presence is a testament to the tragic death of George Taylor, an African American man who was the victim of one of the only documented lynchings in Wake County.
