The National Weather Service in Sacramento has provided a brief break from the recent damp and chilly conditions, offering a temporary return to dry, seasonably mild weather. The latest forecast suggests that while daytime conditions will be pleasant, we should prepare for some cold nights ahead. "Dry weather with near to above normal high temperatures continue. Cold overnight low temperatures with areas of patchy frost expected this week," states NWS in a recent update.
Currently, the Valley is witnessing some calm before an expected return to breezy conditions. "Winds are generally calm and less than 10 mph across the Valley floor this morning," according to the NWS report, but we shouldn’t get too comfortable: "Breezy to locally gusty north to east winds return this weekend." While the coming days are expected to bring clear skies, the cold nights will be noticeable, with patchy frost likely forming on the ground as temperatures drop.
Sacramentans looking for a break from the cold will have to wait, as the chilling embrace of current weather patterns shows little sign of waning quickly. The NWS explains that a closed low off the southern California coast and a 500mb high pressure off the Northern California coast are largely responsible for the current conditions. These weather formations are conspiring to keep our high temperatures "seasonable to slightly above normal" and mornings cold. In particular, "probabilities around 25% for reaching 32 F or colder" linger through Friday, especially south of Sacramento.
As for aviation interests, flights in the region should proceed smoothly, with the NWS noting "Mainly VFR conditions over interior NorCal next 24 hrs." Pilots should be mindful though, as "areas of N-E surface wind 15-25 kts with gusts to 35 kts in N and E foothills/mountains thru 20z Wed" could introduce some challenges. Although winds at ground level may not be as strong as in previous events, the forecast predicts gusts will still sweep through by the weekend, serving as a brisk reminder of winter’s lingering presence.
For those looking for relief in the extended forecasts, the outlook remains unchanged. "High amplitude EPAC upper ridging remains dominant synoptic feature influencing interior NorCal through the extended period," the NWS declares. This suggests a continued period of dry weather, with gusty winds potentially lasting from Monday into the early part of the week.
