In what's shaping up to be a significant breach of electoral trust, two Saginaw political figures have found themselves entangled in legal trouble. Eric Eggleston, who had eyes on a seat within the Saginaw City Council, and current council member Monique Lamar-Silvia stand accused of felony charges related to election forgery. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's office released details of these charges which connect to an alleged scheme to falsify signatures on Eggleston's nominating petitions.
Eggleston's alleged wrongdoing includes a count each of conspiracy to commit a legal act in an illegal manner and election law forgery, both with a maximum sentence of five years, along with a misdemeanor for signing a petition as a circulator when he did not do the work. Meanwhile, Lamar-Silvia is charged with similar felonies, with the added accusation of signing the petition with multiple names, a clear violation of the integrity of the electoral process.
The charges stem from an incident on July 23, 2024, where Lamar-Silvia is accused of fraudulently signing names to help Eggleston's campaign. Afterward, Eggleston himself allegedly misrepresented his role by signing off as the petition's circulator. Despite these efforts, Eggleston failed to secure a spot on the ballot. As per the Michigan Department of Attorney General's Office, the nature of the charge was laid bare: "Election laws and regulations ensure fairness and accountability in the electoral process."
The matter reached the desk of the Attorney General after the Michigan Department of State acted on a complaint from the Saginaw City Clerk, highlighting the diligent work of local authorities to maintain the sanctity of the ballot box. "Dedicated and trustworthy clerks play a critical role in protecting local elections, as they demonstrated in this case by successfully identifying and disqualifying fraudulent signatures," Nessel noted, as per the Attorney General's Office. Arraignment dates for Eggleston and Lamar-Silvia are yet to be set, keeping a wary public eye on the proceedings as they unfold.
