San Antonio's District 2 is ringing in change with a fresh art installation at the N. New Braunfels overpass, set to unveil today. Councilmember Jalen McKee-Rodriguez has announced this update, signaling a continued homage to the area's deep roots in civil rights and cultural significance. The previous art that has been a gateway for residents and visitors alike is giving way to a new creative expression of unity and justice.
"For nearly three decades, artwork above the N. New Braunfels bridge has welcomed thousands of people into the Eastside, telling the story of unity in the fight for justice," McKee-Rodriguez expressed in a statement. “Over the years, the art has faded. Today we are proud to announce the installation of new artwork that both honors the outgoing pieces and tells the modern story of unity, justice, community, and a further commitment to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream that rings on,” as per a news release from the City of San Antonio.
The councilmember highlighted the significance of District 2 in San Antonio's storied history regarding civil rights, arts, and culture. "District 2 is at the epicenter of San Antonio’s unique civil rights, arts, and cultural history, and these new art installations reflect the Eastside’s place as a leader in that work," McKee-Rodriguez said, as noted by the same news release.
