Chaos ensued at the Kalamazoo Transit Center this morning following a shooting that left one person injured. As reported by WOODTV, the incident drew a significant police response, including multiple squad cars, a K-9 unit, and officers brandishing rifles. Witness Cory Coffman shared with the outlet a harrowing account of two men, who appeared to be either fighting or joking, until a "flash from one of the guy’s coat pockets" was followed by one man declaring, "I got shot. I got shot."
Authorities have not yet caught the shooter despite being "actively working leads," as detailed in a statement from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety. The early investigation suggests the act was not random. News 8's crew, having been on the scene around 10:40 a.m., observed the victim receiving emergency aid before transportation to a hospital, where they remained stable. The incident so close, which caused a temporary halt to rail service and prompted the Kalamazoo Valley Community College to issue a stay-inside alert, has left the community on edge.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety updated the public through their Facebook page, reassuring that the Kalamazoo Transit Center had reopened by 12:06 PM and that Amtrak services resumed shortly before. With the suspect still at large, the community remains vigilant while police continue scouring the area for any trace of the alleged gunman.
