
A devastating fire in New Castle County's Fox Run Apartments has hospitalized six people and two dogs and displaced a multitude of residents. The inferno broke out yesterday at about 2:30 p.m. on the 1000 block of Woodchuck Place in Bear, Delaware. FOX 29 reported that firefighters faced substantial wind-driven flames upon their arrival, challenging their efforts to extinguish the blaze, which ultimately called for a second alarm.
The fire, which tore through the building's roof and sent smoke billowing from the structure, resulted in six hospitalizations. "Six people, including two children and two dogs, were treated by medics at the scene before being transported to area hospitals for further treatment," officials detailed. Among the injured were a 36-year-old man in serious condition and a pair of infants; an 8-month-old boy and a 5-month-old girl, as well as two women, ages 33 and 20, all being treated for smoke inhalation and in stable condition, according to FOX 29.
Additionally, the American Red Cross is stepping in to aid approximately 36 individuals who lost their homes due to the fire, offering financial assistance, essential item replacement, and recovery resources, NBC Philadelphia stated. Neighbors have expressed their distress, with Dylan Corcoran telling 6ABC, "Seeing something like this is very surreal. It's definitely a little gut-wrenching for everybody around here." The community's spirit was highlighted when New Castle County police officers rescued pets from the engulfed building, praised by residents for their prompt response and dedication.
Now charred and vacant, the apartment building encapsulates a more than $1 million loss. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, with the Delaware State Fire Marshal leading an ongoing investigation.
