The streets of South Philadelphia's Grays Ferry neighborhood witnessed chaos last night as a 16-inch water main break caused extensive flooding and damages. According to FOX29, the water main break occurred near South 28th and Dickenson streets, with water overflowing and residents scrambling to deal with the aftermath.
Neighborhood streets were submerged in water shortly before 8 p.m., and the NBC10 report highlighted that the Philadelphia Water Department shut down the compromised main to prevent further damage and that 28th Street would remain closed while crews worked on repairs. SkyForce10 captured footage of the inundation, which showed neighbors assembled at a safe distance, watching the rising waters envelop the street and a corner intersection.
The creation of a sinkhole complicated the situation, and as 6abc reported, officials succeeded in turning off the valve in the affected area, though the number of impacted residents remains unclear. "Heartbroken. They were trying to find the shutoff, and then it's unsafe now because you can't walk over there because the ground is going to fall down," Michael Moss, a landlord in the area, told 6abc. "We're going to have to move people around, put them in housing and take care of them. That's the first thing and then we'll worry about damages after," he added.
