As southeast Wisconsin endures a ruthless stretch of cold air, local organizations and weather services are stepping up to provide crucial information and support to those bracing against the freezing temperatures. Extended hours and warming centers are part of the immediate response for residents to combat what has been described as one of the coldest periods this winter, as per FOX6 News.
Milwaukee County Department of Health and Human Services has announced the opening of Marcia P. Coggs Human Services Center as a daytime warming site, operating Monday and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., according to FOX6 News. The location at 1220 W. Vliet St. welcomes anyone in need, using the 13th Street entrance. Additionally, Repairers of the Breach, a nonprofit in Milwaukee, will keep their doors open for extended hours. James West, the executive director, remarked in a statement, "We usually close at 4 o’clock," adding, "Prepare for the warming room open back up at 7 p.m., but we’re not gonna even ask them to move around for those few hours in this dangerous weather."
The severity of the conditions prompted a Cold Weather Advisory through noon Tuesday, with an Extreme Cold Warning kicking in at midnight for counties including Jefferson, Fond Du Lac, Sheboygan, Dodge, Washington, and Ozaukee, as reported by WTMJ News. Wind chills near 35 below zero could lead to frostbite within just 10 minutes. This dangerous cold snap is expected to hold its icy grip on the region through early Wednesday.
In light of the pressing cold, Storm Team 4 Meteorologist Tyler Moore provided insights on the extreme temperatures, "The coldest part of this air mass arrives tonight. Overnight lows will fall close to -10 near the lake and -15 inland", Moore detailed. On top of bone-chilling temperatures, a few flurries might also add to the winter woes. Meanwhile, CBS 58 underscores Tuesday morning will see the harshest conditions, with wind chills as low as -35 degrees anticipated.
