Authorities said that two ice fishermen were stranded on an ice floe about a mile from shore on Saginaw Bay yesterday and were subsequently rescued without injury. The incident began around midday when their icy perch broke free, setting them adrift in the bay's frigid waters.

The U.S. Coast Guard Station Saginaw River received a distress call at approximately 12:35 p.m., as noted by ABC12. An ice rescue team mobilized, braving deteriorating weather conditions, and successfully reached and safely escorted the pair back to Almeda Beach, a location north of Bay City State Park.

Multiple agencies collaborated in the rescue, with personnel from the Bay County Sheriff's Department, Pinconning-Fraser Fire Department, Kawkawlin Fire Departments, and Air Station Detroit participating. As reported by CBS News Detroit, a helicopter from Air Station Detroit surveyed the bay to ensure that no other individuals were trapped.

Senior Chief Petty Officer James Hassinger of the U.S. Coast Guard underlined the importance of ice safety in light of the incident, "As temperatures drop and winter activities like ice fishing and snowmobiling draw people to frozen lakes and rivers, understanding the dangers of ice is critical to prevent accidents," he remarked as published by OurMidland. The Coast Guard advises all ice fishermen to wear a flotation device and maintain a means of communication to safeguard against risks.
