As Detroit grapples with the aftermath of a tragic hit-and-run incident, authorities have announced the arrest of the suspect involved. The collision resulted in the death of an off-duty police officer, the city's police department disclosed yesterday afternoon. Officer Cameron Richardson, a 32-year-old former U.S. Army veteran and a relatively new member of the Detroit police force, was the victim in this tragic event, as reported by The Detroit News.

Richardson was driving home from his shift when a white van, making a left turn at the intersection of Hoover and Greiner Street, collided with his vehicle, causing it to roll over, authorities said. Despite the swift action of first responders, who received a call around 12:09 a.m. last Sunday, Richardson did not survive the injuries sustained in the crash. While the suspect's identity has not yet been made public, an arrest was made after the van was found a short distance from the scene by Michigan State Police, as noted by FOX 2 Detroit. Details on the pending arraignment are still awaited.

The late officer, who served as a ranger and staff sergeant in the U.S. Army prior to his policing career, was remembered in Police Chief Todd Bettison's press conference as "somewhat quiet, but very, very conscientious and thorough," according to The Detroit News. His bereaved family includes his parents and two young daughters, aged 12 and 14, who are now facing the brunt of funeral expenses as their father was off-duty at the time of his death.

Mourning their significant loss, Mona Richardson, Cameron's mother, recounted her shock upon receiving the dreadful news, conveying to CBS Detroit, "It's almost like I feel like somebody just knocked me out of my body like an out-of-body experience. Like did you just say that? Like I didn't understand it. It just took me a minute to process what they said when I got the call." In a heartfelt admission, she also spoke about the promising futures of her granddaughters, sharing, "His daughters are so smart, so so smart." She added, "I know the oldest one goes to Renaissance and she wants to go to Sanford or Brown. So she wants to go to a really good college, and same with the youngest one. So that's going to be such a blessing 'cause I know that's what he wants." To assist the family with upcoming funeral costs and the support of Richardson's daughters, a GoFundMe page has been established.
