Chaos erupted on a Milwaukee street as a routine surveillance operation turned into a public spectacle. According to FOX6 News, yesterday, a man wanted for burglary and fleeing led the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office on a high-speed chase that ended with a crash at a library construction site. The deputies had attempted a traffic stop near 2nd and Lloyd before the suspect sped off, initiating the pursuit.
Caught in the mayhem, a red vehicle driven by a 19-year-old was struck by the suspect's vehicle after it ran a red light at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Locust. Monitored by deputies from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, the suspect attempted to elude capture when he dashed from a home and jumped into his SUV. A nearby business owner, Trudy Kralj, witnessed the aftermath and mentioned undercover agencies being present, suggesting the gravity of the situation, as quoted by FOX6 News.
While the young driver of the second vehicle escaped injury, the collision had other repercussions. A 23-year-old construction worker onsite experienced leg pain, although he was cleared at the scene by the Milwaukee Fire Department, reported WISN 12 News. The suspect, on the other hand, was taken into custody unharmed.
As for the construction site itself, Yves LaPierre, Milwaukee Public Library Construction Projects Manager, minimized the incident's impact on the project's timeline. "It's a setback, but we're going to get right back on the project and get that taken care of ASAP," LaPierre told WISN 12 News. Future safety measures were already in the works, with LaPierre explaining that the library's design included a large concrete bench that would have actually stopped the car from doing the damage you see.
Details about the chase and the construction site's status were also confirmed by CBS58, reinforcing that the incident, although shocking, would not significantly delay the library's completion. The library is expected to open its doors to the public within the next several months, pending recovery from the accident.
