A man connected with a deadly hit-and-run that took the life a Goldsboro woman has been arrested, North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed. Last month's crash also left three others gravely injured, including a small child. Authorities have identified the suspect as 49-year-old Robert Brad Williams of Hickory.
The arrest occurred just after 3:40 p.m. Saturday when troopers made a felony traffic stop on a 2016 white Mercedes Benz on I-95 northbound at the 71-mile marker in Harnett County, CBS 17 reported. This development follows the collision along U.S. 70 Bypass near Clayton on December 15, 2024, where the 24-year-old Kortney Summer Atkins lost her life.
As reported by ABC11, Williams, a passenger in the Mercedes during the traffic stop, was being tracked from Robeson County through Cumberland County prior to his arrest. Following his arrest, the driver of the Mercedes was also detained, but later released after an investigation. Williams currently is held in Johnston County Detention Center in Smithfield on numerous charges, with no bond issued.
The tragic crash occurred when Williams, allegedly driving in the wrong direction, struck an oncoming white Jeep Cherokee head-on, as detailed by WRAL. Atkins was killed in the impact and a woman, alongside a 4-year-old boy and his father, were all seriously injured and taken to WakeMed for treatment.
