In an effort to directly address the healthcare needs of its homeless population, the City of Tampa has launched an innovative On-Demand Health Care solution in collaboration with Tampa General Hospital, Catholic Charities Diocese of St. Petersburg, and OnMed. An OnMed CareStation has been installed at the Tampa Hope homeless shelter, making it the first in the nation to offer such advanced, on-site healthcare access to its residents.

The CareStation, funded by Tampa General Hospital and The McNamara Foundation, is essentially a portable clinic capable to provide immediate healthcare services. According to a statement released by the City of Tampa, it features real-time consultations via high-definition video and comes outfitted with an array of medical devices to accurately diagnose and treat patients on the spot. Tampa officials have invited local media to attend an official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the CareStation tomorrow at 10 a.m. to get a closer look at the facility.

The innovative design of the CareStation allows individuals to receive medical care by simply pressing a "start" button on the interactive screen inside. They are then connected with a nurse assistant, who guides them through the intake process, and subsequently, to a virtual consultation with an OnMed clinician. The station is well-equipped with diagnostic tools and high-definition thermal imaging cameras to facilitate thorough examinations, as per the City of Tampa.

John Couris, President and CEO of Tampa General Hospital, emphasized the hospital's dedication to community care. "As the region’s leading academic medical system and safety-net hospital, our job is to care for the entire community,” he told the City of Tampa. "Through this innovative program, we can provide accessible world-class health and wellness care to Tampa Hope residents when and where they need it." The CareStation also has the capability to issue e-prescriptions and reroute electronic medical records as necessary, ensuring continuity of care.

The impact of this health care access initiative is already being felt, as reported by Catholic Charities. Maggie Rogers, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of St. Petersburg, said, "The OnMed CareStation has already proven invaluable here at Tampa Hope," in a release from the City of Tampa. Residents can access essential healthcare services without delay, which is critical for both immediate health concerns and consistent preventative care. Following each use, an automatic sanitization cycle readies the station for the next patient, ensuring a safe and clean environment.

The alliance among the City of Tampa and its partners reflects an emerging approach to healthcare for homeless communities across the country. Karthik Ganesh, CEO of OnMed, pointed to the importance of such collaborations, stating, "This partnership is an exemplary model for cities across America to observe and emulate as our country continues to struggle with the issue of homelessness." The City of Tampa is taking a clear step in transforming both the delivery of healthcare and the urban response to homelessness with this cutting-edge project.
