Attorney General Ken Paxton is taking on Costco, pushing the retail giant to toss out its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies, deemed by him to be discriminatory. In a move that aligns with an executive order from President Trump, Paxton sent out a multistate letter, backed by officials from Iowa and Kansas, demanding a full repeal of these corporate practices, as reported by the Texas Attorney General's office.
The thrust of Paxton’s argument is that Costco's commitment to DEI initiatives runs counter to the ethic of equal treatment, despite claims by supporters that such programs are aimed at fostering inclusivity and fairness within the corporate landscape; however, Paxton sees DEI as peddling "divisive and discriminatory ideology." "Discriminatory DEI policies are unethical, unlawful, and fundamentally un-American," said Attorney General Paxton, according to the announcement on the Texas Attorney General's website. His stance is that these programs actually entrench division rather than ameliorate it and he now awaits Costco's response within a 30-day window.
Paxton's letter comes on the heels of deliberate stances by the U.S. Supreme Court cautioning against the use of race-based preferences and classifications. It's a particularly notable move in an era where many corporations are expanding their focus on social and diversity initiatives. Costco has previously expressed unflinching support for its DEI practices, which it claims are designed to bring about more representative and equitable professional environments.
