Yesterday morning, commuters on eastbound I-696 near Farmington Hills experienced significant delays following a multi-car incident. According to CBS News Detroit, the crash, which occurred around 7:30 a.m. near the Interstate 275 interchange, resulted in at least three vehicles catching fire. Officials at the scene had to shut down the interstate to tackle the blaze and manage cleanup efforts.
While the fiery spectacle caused substantial traffic disruptions, there was a silver lining, as no injuries were reported. "Please use this as a reminder to slow down and move over for any emergency vehicles working on the roadway," Farmington Hills officials said, a sentiment echoed in the report from ClickOnDetroit. The fire department's quick response ensured that the fires were extinguished and that the affected stretch of freeway was reopened to traffic as speedily as possible, though clean-up work initially kept the road down to one lane.
The congestion extended beyond I-696, with backups reported on I-275, I-96, and M-5 during peak commute hours. According to a statement detailed by WWJ Newsradio, despite the chaos, it was remarkable that there were no injuries resulting from the crash or subsequent fires. The Farmington Hills Fire Department has not yet released details about what caused the crash or who might be at fault, as their investigations were ongoing.
