In an innovative approach to wildfire prevention, Steiner Ranch in Travis County has employed a herd of eager goats to graze on potentially hazardous vegetation. According to a report by CBS Austin, these goats, provided by Rent-A-Ruminant Texas, started their task on January 4 and will continue through January 10, operating in shifts that span the full 24-hour day.

Tasked specifically with consuming the overgrowth in the green belt area along the Chaparral Hiking Trail, the goats' appetite for various plants will effectively reduce the risk of wildfires, said Lake Travis Fire Rescue Fire Chief Robert B. Abbott in a statement. Grazing as a wildfire prevention measure offers a remedy that is both cost-effective and environmentally friendly, according to the fire chief—Moving through the underbrush, ones encounters these ungulates, often poison ivy, which not only protects human crews but also aids in the environment's health.

The initiative is part of broader efforts by the community to increase its resilience against future wildfires. "Protecting our community from wildfire risk is a top priority, and this project is a vital piece of a larger strategy. Once the goats have cleared the vegetation, we’ll collaborate with Lake Travis Fire Rescue's Fuels Mitigation team to complete the work and further enhance our wildfire resilience," SRROA President Debbie Tanner-Jacobs told CBS Austin.

Echoing the sentiment, a piece by KXAN notes that the program emulates similar successful strategies, such as the one implemented by The Trail Conservancy around Lady Bird Lake in 2023. Goats, contained within temporary electrified fencing curated the area, are not only reducing the wildfire risk but are also providing a blueprint for future eco-friendly vegetation management solutions throughout the region.
