Trinity Health Oakland is embarking on a major expansion of its emergency department with a $48 million project designed to enhance patient care and streamline services. According to a statement provided by The Detroit News, the new 50,000-square-foot facility will replace the existing 19,000-square-foot emergency department, promising to double its size and improve the overall function and capacity of the hospital's urgent care services.

Groundbreaking for the construction began in June 2024, and the healthcare organization aims to complete the new emergency department by 2027. The project is designed to not only increase space but also to provide dedicated units that can adequately address behavioral health needs and pediatric care. Fabian Fregoli, M.D., chief medical officer and president of Trinity Health Oakland, expressed excitement about the upcoming changes. "A new Emergency Department represents a significant investment in our hospital and in our community, which will meaningfully improve patient flow and position us to provide more efficient, timely care to our patients," Fregoli told ClickOnDetroit.

Among the new enhancements will be larger patient care rooms, a unit specifically dedicated to behavioral health that aims to increase privacy and dignity for patients receiving care in this setting, and more trauma bays. A novel ambulance entrance is set to make emergency services more efficient for EMS workers. While this development is underway, the current emergency department will stay operational 24/7, reassuring patients that services will remain uninterrupted.

Trinity Health Oakland has made it a point to recognize community contributions that have been pivotal in moving this expansion forward. Nearly half of the funds for the project have been sourced from donations by the community, as detailed by WXYZ. Rahul Mehta, M.D., chair of Emergency Medicine at Trinity Health Oakland, conveyed the enthusiasm of the medical staff, stating, "All of our doctors, nurses, and support staff are really excited, because we know the value of improved patient flows and facility upgrades, and how they can make a significant impact on the patient experience" He added the importance of meeting growing demands for medical services with greater precision and efficiency. Interested donors can still contribute to the project by contacting the director of major gifts and corporate philanthropy Craig Peiser at Trinity Health or by visiting the giving website.
