
A 24-year-old University of Michigan student was hospitalized yesterday after being hit by a vehicle in Ann Arbor, authorities say. The incident occurred just before 11:30 a.m. on N. University Avenue between S. Thayer and Fletcher Streets, near the Thayer Academic Building. According to FOX 2 Detroit, the student, who has not been identified, suffered serious injuries and was transferred to a local hospital following the accident. The driver, a 72-year-old woman from Ypsilanti, also received medical attention for neck injuries.
Ann Arbor police alongside University of Michigan officers, and firefighter and EMS crews responded to the scene. The student was reportedly unconscious when emergency services arrived, as cited by ClickOnDetroit. Further details revealed the student was hit at a mid-block crosswalk and, is now in serious but stable condition in the hospital.
The driver involved in the crash remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement during the preliminary investigation. According to police reports, there are currently no indications that speed and reckless driving were factors in the incident. However, whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash is still under examination. Authorities closed westbound N. University Avenue for several hours after, the crash but the road has since reopened, as stated by WWJ Newsradio.
