Waldemar Alverio, 38, has pleaded guilty to three counts of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree for two shootings that occurred in Tompkins Square Park in March 2024. The guilty plea was entered yesterday, as reported by the Manhattan District Attorney's office. Alverio is expected to receive a 13-year state prison sentence on February 3.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. emphasized, "Waldemar Alverio was held accountable for committing two broad-daylight shootings in Tompkins Square Park, just days apart." According to the DA's office, these shootings not only caused serious injuries to the victims but also put the safety of many New Yorkers at risk. Furthermore, DA Bragg reiterated the commitment to combatting gun violence in pursuit of lasting public safety, signaling a determined effort to remove illegal firearms from the streets of New York City.
The series of events leading up to Alverio's guilty plea involved two distinct shootings. The first took place on March 16, 2024, when two individuals assaulted Alverio before fleeing, after which he fired at them, injuring one man and a bystander—both requiring medical surgeries for their injuries. Alverio returned to the same park five days later and engaged in another shooting, this time without hitting anyone, but his bullets damaged surrounding residential property. Detailed information regarding the incidents was made available by the court documents and Alverio's own admissions during his guilty plea.
Law enforcement moved quickly to apprehend Alverio following the shootings, successfully locating him on March 26, 2024, on the Lower East Side, with assistance from officers who recognized him from a wanted flyer. The prosecution was managed by Assistant D.A. Joseph Abrams of Trial Bureau 70, under the guidance of Executive Assistant D.A. Lisa DelPizzo, Chief of the Trial Division. The successful prosecution and subsequent guilty plea also saw contributions from the NYPD, including the efforts of Detectives Christopher McNeely, Danielle Venuto, Vladislav Abramov, and Joseph Cohen.
