The U.S. Secret Service is leading the charge on this, prioritizing the safety and security of both protectees and the public amid the impending historical occasion, certain downtown roads that were originally planned to shut down starting Sunday at 12:01 a.m. will now be closing earlier on Saturday, East/west travel on Constitution and Independence Avenues and north/south travel on 7th Street, 9th Street, 14th Street, and 17th Street will still be open for traffic flow, as per the Metropolitan Police Department.
Special Agent in Charge Matt McCool stated in the police department's announcement, "The Secret Service's number one priority, along with our law enforcement partners, is the safety and security of our protectees and members of the public attending this historic event," as stated by the Metropolitan Police Department, highlighting the importance of this measure and seeking public understanding as these security plans are refined.
From 7:00 PM on January 18, concrete barricades will block garages and alleyways within an area bounded by Pennsylvania Avenue NW to F Street NW, between 9th and 15th Streets NW, as well as other specified locations. These measures are part of efforts to fortify the inauguration security zone. Travel will be severely restricted within the pedestrian area, affecting major roads previously listed, and altering the commuting landscape to ensure a secure environment for the inauguration.
