Residents and travelers in the nation’s capital should prepare for significant disruptions today. According to an announcement by the Metropolitan Police Department, the 2025 Presidential Inauguration Rehearsal Parade will lead to extensive road closures throughout Washington, D.C. In a release, authorities detailed that from as early as 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., some streets will face intermittent closures, transitioning to full closures from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., impacting major thoroughfares including Pennsylvania Avenue and Constitution Avenue.
The breadth of the event's reach into the city's grid is substantial, with areas from 3rd Street to 20th Street, NW along Pennsylvania Avenue being affected, among others. For the drivers who mistakenly leave their cars on the parade route, there's a clear consequence; the MPD has indicated that vehicles not respecting the emergency no-parking signs will be subjected to ticketing and towing. Furthermore, restrictions will remain in effect well beyond the rehearsal day, with no parking allowed through January 22 at 6:00 a.m. around the Inauguration perimeter, affecting streets including 23rd Street, NW, 22nd Street, NW, and many adjacent roads.
The rehearsal itself is a traditional prelude to the official inauguration, mapping out the gamut of the ceremony's procession. Nevertheless, the practical implications for D.C.'s routine cannot be understated. The Metropolitan Police Department and the D.C. Department of Transportation advise that motorists in the vicinity of the rehearsal may encounter delays and should consider alternative routes wherever possible. They also remind drivers to exercise caution, as increased pedestrian traffic is an expected side effect of these densely attended proceedings.
