The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has announced an expansion of its Clear Lanes initiative to include additional locations in the District. The program, a collaborative effort between DDOT and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), employs camera technology to crack down on illegal parking and vehicle stops in designated bus lanes and zones. Targeted areas for the Clear Lanes program have been selected based on traffic data analysis that pinpointed a need for more stringent bus lane sections, as per the District Department of Transportation.
Starting January 27, there will be a 45-day period for educational outreach where violators caught by the Clear Lanes enforcement will receive warning notices. Once this phase concludes, effective Monday, March 17, 2025, DDOT will begin issuing $100 fines to those who are caught and identified as obstructing bus zones or lanes. The intention is to quicken bus travel times and boost safety at bus stops.
Concerned motorists can gather more information about the expanded automated camera enforcement spots through the Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) HUB or by using the District's Ticket Alert Service (TAS) to keep updated with potential infractions and avoid penalties. The District's TAS is available for enrollment at the DMV website, and DDOT encourages, local drivers to take advantage of this service to stay informed and compliant.
