The Waukesha community has come together to support the family of Megan Voss, a 17-year-old killed in a drunk driving crash on Dec. 30. A fundraiser was held at a local Culver's restaurant, where 50% of sales from Jan. 4 were donated. The franchise owner, Fred Kohls, aimed to raise $20,000 but ended up collecting $22,000. "It's just an amazing show of support from the Waukesha community," Kohls told WISN 12 News.
Friends and community members showed up in impressive numbers, causing significant wait times, a testament to their solidarity, which illustrated a collective effort to rally around those in need, the Culver's owner stated, "It's amazing, the community that we have in Waukesha is just everybody rallies around when somebody needs help," and mentioned the community's involvement, emphasizing that "when something terrible like this happens, it's such a terrible situation, but the community shows up, and they show their support," according to FOX6 News.
Cars lined up down Sunset Drive, with some customers waiting up to 45 minutes to support the cause. The proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Voss family. Friends of Megan Voss, Ava Bellovary and Trianna Wenzel, organized the event and thanked the community for its support. Bellovary, holding back tears, said, "Megan stood for kindness and helping people so this was something that she would have wanted, to help, and she would have done it for any of us," as per TMJ4.
Aside from the fundraiser, a GoFundMe page was also set up to help the Voss family with the unexpected costs of the funeral and medical expenses, with the community continuing to offer financial support for the family. The suspect in the crash, 19-year-old Jason Zehe, faces three felony charges, including homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, a sobering reminder of the consequences of drunk driving as echoed by Voss's friend Ava Bellovary, who during an interview echoed a plea for safety asserting, "Please don't drink and drive, It's very bad," she said, "It's a terrible thing, and it could have been anybody's daughter, and it happened to one of the best people," as reported by FOX6 News in their coverage.
