Residents in Waukesha County are being urged by local health officials to protect their health and that of their families by testing their homes for radon gas. As we find ourselves deep in National Radon Action Month, officials emphasize the importance of awareness and action against this invisible threat, according to a recent announcement by the Waukesha County.
Known to be the second leading cause of lung cancer, radon is a radioactive gas that lacks scent and hue, which sneaks into homes primarily through their foundation. It's a pervasive risk, not discriminating by the age of a dwelling, and putting both vintage and contemporary homes at equal risk. Waukesha County's website shared information revealing a concerning statistic: about 40 to 50 percent of the homes tested in Southeast Wisconsin showed elevated levels of radon on the main living level.
January's cold weather keeps most people inside, making it a good time to test homes for radon. Testing is simple and affordable, with radon test kits costing around $10. These kits can be purchased from the Southeast Wisconsin Radon Information Center at 262-896-8300, local public health agencies, or home supply stores, as per the Waukesha County.
Testing your home for radon is an important step in protecting your health. Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow reminds us, "It is important to test your home for radon to know it is safe." Taking action now helps ensure your home stays safe and healthy during the winter.
