Waymo, the autonomous vehicle technology pioneer, has begun to usher in a new era on Los Angeles freeways by pressing forward with testing of driverless robotaxis, previously spotted on surface streets from Santa Monica to downtown LA. According to FOX LA, this marks a significant expansion beyond Waymo’s existing 79 square mile coverage area.
Freeways are an intrinsic part of the LA experience. To better serve our expansive 79-square-mile service area, we're beginning to provide our employees with access to fully autonomous rides on LA freeways—a key step toward expanding this capability to all riders. pic.twitter.com/oWqVQ1hlJz

Initially, these autonomous rides are exclusive to Waymo employees, with a strategic plan to roll out the service to the public, eyeing a reduction in travel times as a key benefit; for example, a trek from Santa Monica Pier to the Broad Museum could halve in duration when using Interstate 10, a claim supported by Waymo themselves in a post on their official webpage. The selected freeways for this groundbreaking test are Interstates 10, 110, 405, and 90, a move that signifies a deepening of Waymo’s imprint in the transportation fabric of Los Angeles.
After receiving the green light in March 2024 from the California Public Utilities Commission, as documented by a TechCrunch article, Waymo’s ambition does not waver. It mirrors the gradient of its past ventures where testing evolves into full-fledged services.
