A Wayne State University employee lost their life after being struck by a vehicle in Detroit's Midtown area, a tragedy that unfolded Wednesday morning. The accident occurred around 8:40 a.m. at the intersection of Woodward and Warren Avenues, with Detroit police reporting that a collision between two vehicles precipitated the fatal impact on the pedestrian. The identity of the victim, confirmed to be an employee of the university, has yet to be disclosed. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
"All of the sudden the impact of the cars hit. And the gentleman was standing there, he went airborne and fell down. And that terrified me because I could do nothing but cry because that was somebody’s father, brother, whoever, family member," attested Paula White, an eyewitness who spoke to FOX 2 Detroit. White was present at a traffic signal when the crash played out before her eyes, prompting her to contact emergency services. According to her account, one of the cars was making a turn when it was struck, resulting in the pedestrian being hit.
In response to the incident, Wayne State University President Kimberly Espy released a statement sending heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. "We are connecting with our colleague's loved ones, with whom we are sharing our heartfelt condolences. Please continue to support and care for one another across our community during this difficult time," Espy's statement, mentioned by CBS News, aimed to offer solace in the face of loss.
The university is reaching out to students and staff offering counseling and psychological services in the wake of the tragedy.
