Starting March 3, West Allis residents will have the chance to delve into the world of law enforcement through the Community Police Academy, a program aimed at demystifying police operations within their city. Over the course of 10 weeks, participants will gather every Monday evening from 6-9 p.m. to learn directly from the people on the ground—patrol officers, K-9 handlers, traffic investigators, detectives, and SWAT members—each sharing their expertise in the multifaceted field of public safety, according to the City of West Allis.
The interactive sessions will take place at the West Allis Police Department Assembly Room at 11301 W. Lincoln Ave. Residents will get a unique look inside law enforcement, with hands-on experiences, including the chance to fire a handgun at the firing range, as per the City of West Allis.
The City of West Allis website reports that the academy aims to educate and encourage discussion about the challenges police face today. It is part of community policing efforts to improve the relationship between residents and police, which is important in a time when trust and transparency are needed more than ever.
