In West Michigan, Boulder Ridge Wild Animal Park welcomed a six-foot, 100-pound giraffe calf born around Christmas 2024. The calf is the second for mother Ginger, a long-time resident at the park, according to FOX17.
The birth came with challenges—Ginger's milk didn't come in, so the staff had to bottle-feed the calf to keep it alive. Unfortunately, Ginger also showed no interest in her baby. Park Manager Josh Baker commented, “A couple of our other giraffes are great mothers, they take really great care of their babies; so this could have just been a fluke thing, or we really don’t know or understand why she decided not to,” as stated by WZZM13.
Boulder Ridge is caring for a newborn giraffe, who, like many newborns, is a bit wobbly on her legs. While her name hasn’t been decided, suggestions are pouring in, with Christmas-themed names like "Joy" and "Holly" and others like "Miracle" and "Spice." Some also propose names like "Snap" and "Cookie" to match her mom, Ginger. The park is running a Facebook naming contest, looking for a catchy, endearing name, as reported by Sacramento Bee.
