A pipeline fire in Wharton County commanded attention this afternoon, with flames shooting into the sky and prompting local authorities to advise the public to keep their distance. The incident occurred near Highway 90 between East Bernard and Lissie, and although the blaze was a dramatic sight, the Wharton County Sheriff’s Office stated that there were no injuries, and Highway 90 remained open to traffic, as reported by KHOU.
Details were sparse as the Kinder Morgan-operated pipeline continued to burn while emergency procedures were launched. The company worked to close the valve feeding the gas line, hoping to extinguish the fire by allowing the pressure to decrease. The sheriff's office communicated the situation to the public and reassured that, despite the potentially daunting spectacle, the roadways remained open. By around 2:30 p.m., the fire had diminished following the closing of the valve, with the sequence of events captured by Air 11's aerial coverage.
In a parallel account from Fox 26 Houston, they confirmed the Sheriffs's statement, adding that by shortly after 2 p.m., the fire had been successfully subdued, enabling fire units to return to service, though the cause of the fire remained unclear at the time of reporting.
