The Wilson community is grappling with shock and sorrow following the discovery of a 71-year-old man, identified as David James Kelly, who was found dead in his Wilson home this past weekend. CBS 17 reports that police were called to 506 Kenan Street shortly before 3:15 p.m. yesterday after concerns were raised about the welfare of a person.
Responding to the scene, officers found Kelly deceased within his residence and are now treating the incident as a homicide, as noted in a Wilson Police Department news release. After being killed, found inside his home was the victim and, by the tragedy, the community has been thoroughly shaken up.
Evidence gathering and investigations have led to the temporary closure of the 500 block of Kenan Street, from Park Avenue to Daniel Street. According to Restoration News Media, the police cordoned off the area to conduct their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Kelly’s untimely death.
The Wilson Police Department has called on the public to assist in the investigation by requesting anyone with information to step forward. "Officers arrived on scene and located the victim, David James Kelly, 71, of Wilson deceased inside his residence," said Sgt. Eric McInerny, the public information officer for the Wilson Police Department, a quote obtained by Restoration News Media. Compassion for the family is felt widely by the community and their privacy is urged as the investigation deepens.
Authorities have urged anyone with pertinent details to get in touch with the Wilson Police Department at 252-399-2323 or to provide anonymous tips via Crime Stoppers at 252-243-2255.
