A fierce 3-alarm fire engulfed an apartment building in Washington Heights yesterday evening, drawing over 130 firefighters and medics to the scene. The blaze, which was reported just before 6 p.m. at 598 W 191st St. between Audubon Avenue and St. Nicholas Avenue, raged on the second floor of a six-story structure, according to ABC7NY.
While grappling with the flames, one firefighter sustained minor injuries. The fire, which demanded a significant response from the New York City Fire Department, was brought under control roughly three hours later, around 9 p.m., as per details shared by Patch.com. The incident not only posed a risk to first responders but also forced many residents out into the cold night.
The American Red Cross swiftly provided aid to those affected, offering blankets, water, and a warming bus for displaced residents. The fire left dozens in the Washington Heights community without homes, with the Red Cross stepping in to offer care and support, as reported by ABC7NY. In the aftermath, six families—15 adults and four children—required emergency housing, which the Red Cross ensured was available.
FDNY Fire Marshals continue to investigate the incident, with the cause of the blaze still under review. The New York City Fire Department has not yet determined a definitive cause, according to Patch.com.
