The youthful energy of Dylan Behler may soon infuse the halls of Maryland's General Assembly as the Anne Arundel County Democratic Central Committee has put forth its selection for a vacant House of Delegates seat. As reported by Maryland Matters, at 26 years old, Behler awaits the approval of Governor Wes Moore, and should he ascend, he'd become the assembly's youngest member, stepping into a political arena that deals with a range of pressing issues from budget deficits to housing and childcare crises.
Behler, currently serving as director of legislative and constituent services at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, carries a resume boasting experience as a staffer for U.S. Representative Sarah Elfreth and as the past chief of staff for former state Senator Sarah K. Elfreth. He also brings campaign experience from the 2018 Anne Arundel County Executive race. A report by The Baltimore Banner highlighted his "tangible experience fighting for our Democratic values," said Behler, and as the former Anne Arundel Democratic Central Committee chair, he retains not only a seat on the committee but also the confidence of his peers as evidenced by his receiving 10 votes, including his own, during the selection process.
This selection occurs amidst a frequent turnover in Maryland's legislature, as Behler's appointment would mark the 13th such occurrence since the 2022 election, with more vacancies looming, the process which leaves the choice of representatives in the hands of a relatively small group of party central committee members continues to stir debate among proponents of a more democratic methodology.
