A tragic incident occurred on the streets of South Philadelphia when a 73-year-old man was struck and killed by an SUV. The man, later identified as Peter Serratore, had just been involved in a minor car accident and was checking on the occupants of the other vehicle when the second crash occurred. According to NBC Philadelphia, the accident happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb 23, along the 3000 block of South 10th Street.
After rear-ending another car, Serratore exited his vehicle to assess the situation. While crossing the street, he was struck by a Toyota RAV4 that was operating as a rideshare without passengers at the time. As reported by FOX 29, Phillipa Police Inspector D.F. Pace stated that Serratore was dragged "a considerable distance" by the SUV. Blood discovered inside the vehicle he had been driving suggested he might have suffered an injury before being fatally hit by the SUV.
The driver of the Toyota RAV4 remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. No charges have been filed thus far. The Philadelphia Police Department's Crash Investigation Division is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this fatal event. Serratore was transported to Jefferson University Hospital by Philadelphia Fire Department medics and was pronounced dead at 8:12 p.m., as per FOX 29.
Details about the initial collision are limited, but it occurred at the intersection of 10th Street and Packer Avenue. 6abc.com reports that Serratore fell while walking across the street, which is when the fatal impact with the second vehicle occurred. The investigation is ongoing and police are in the process of piecing together the events that led to Serratore's untimely death.
