Akron is set to turn green with the return of its storied St. Patrick's Day Parade—a spectacle intertwining community, heritage, and revelry. On Saturday, March 8, the city will witness the 42nd iteration of this cultural festivity, which is presented by the Mark Heffernan/Margaret Judge Divisions of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in collaboration with the City of Akron as previously reported on the City of Akron press release official website.
Floats, bands, and various organizations will assemble northward along South Main Street, propelling from Cedar/S. Main to Bowery Street, against the downtown Akron backdrop, where the parade is scheduled to embark promptly at noon; meanwhile, early risers are welcome to indulge in a Parade Day Breakfast at the Hibernian Club, an event sponsored by the Akron Hurling Team.
With line-up activities commencing as early as 10:00 a.m., those wishing to witness the array of high school and grade school bands, non-profit representatives, businesses, animal groups, and vivid floats should mark their spots along the designated route—acknowledging that South Main Street will cease all vehicular passage beginning from 11:50 a.m. between Bartges St. and Mill St., until the parade's conclusion, anticipated no later than 2:30 p.m.
Esteemed participants will undergo review from the All-American Judges Association after the procession's conclusion, receiving accolades for their vibrant showcase on Knight Stage located adjacent to the Akron Civic entrance. This tradition follows a parade led by Honorary Grand Marshall Mark Owens, who was recognized for his unique role as Ohio's first Irish Honorary Consul. Parking guidance for the downtown area can be found here, aiding visitors in easily navigating the festivities.
For those eager to be a part of this cherished Akron custom, the deadline for parade registration approaches on February 25, with sign-up details accessible via the online registration form. As the city readies itself for a day steeped in collective celebration, the streets of Akron await the echoes of joyous cheers, the spectacle of Irish pride, and the community's shared enthusiasm in honoring a heritage that has long weaved itself into the fabric of the city's identity.
