An Allegan County man has been charged with the murder of his mother, nearly five months after she was discovered dead in her home near Pullman, according to local authorities. As reported by WZZM13, the sheriff's office announced yesterday that Craig Michael Mills, aged 23, is facing open murder charges related to the death of 43-year-old Mable Mills, with whom he lived before her passing in Lee Township, Allegan County.
Details of the case, including the fact that Mable did not appear at her job at a local gas station for two consecutive days, led to a welfare check where she was found deceased. While the exact cause of her death has not been disclosed, her son Craig has been implicated in the incident. He had been involved in a traffic accident in Berrien County driving his mother's car and then resisted arrest by local officers on the very day his mother is believed to have been killed, as WOODTV and WWMT said.
Mable Mills was described in her obituary as "a light in lives of many people," and her absence at work caught the immediate attention of her colleagues because "she never 'no called, no showed'," leading to the request for a welfare check by her manager, as noted by WZZM13. The obituary continued to laud her as someone with immense love for the outdoors and her community.
Craig Mills is currently being held at Berrien County Jail, and as indicated by WWMT, no additional suspects are being sought at this time by the authorities despite the ongoing investigation so the focus of the legal proceedings is now fully on the son.
