Residents of Altadena have witnessed the reopening of the Grocery Outlet at 2270 N. Lake Avenue, an establishment that survived the devastating Eaton Fire which swept through the community weeks ago. The store welcomed customers on Wednesday morning, marking a significant step in the town's recovery process. According to Fox LA, owners Jose and Sandra Valenzuela were at the forefront, greeting patrons as they returned to the familiar shopping grounds.
The reopening comes after the local business endured the onslaught of the Eaton Fire, where close neighbors including parts of the Aldi Grocery store were not as fortunate. The Valenzuelas' store faced considerable smoke damage, resulting in the loss of approximately 30 tons of inventory, reportedly valued at $850,000 – covered by insurance. "We’re happy to be here, but it’s also bittersweet because our neighbors are not with us," Sandra Valenzuela told Fox LA, reflecting on the mixed emotions the day brought with it.
The aftermath of the fire was challenging for the community, not least for the Grocery Outlet staff, five of whom lost their homes to the blaze. Sandra Valenzuela expressed her empathy for the neighborhood and her staff in an interview reported by NBC Los Angeles: "Overall saddened, saddened because my neighbors across the street were no longer there, a lot of our community was no longer there." Three of the grocery store employees who had lost their homes have resumed work, signaling a semblance of normalcy amidst the recovery efforts. The owners leveraged their store's parking lot to host multiple community events while the store was closed to support those impacted by the fire.
Remarkably, the journey to reopening was less solitary, with support from the Grocery Outlet company and fellow operators who journeyed from as far as Las Vegas to assist in the clean-up and restocking endeavors, an effort chronicled by CBS News Los Angeles. "We have a solid plan to get us going, but really just being ready for the community is our goal today," Jose Valenzuela told Fox LA. The store is now operating under temporary hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
