Amazon Shuts Down Woodland Hills Go Store Amidst Retreat from Physical Retail SectorSource: Google Street View

Amazon continues to trim its ambitions in the physical retail space as it plans to close down another Amazon Go store, specifically the one located in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, according to KTLA. While once a bustling frontier for the e-commerce giant, Amazon's chain of high-tech convenience stores has seen a significant reduction, with around half of its locations having shuttered since the early part of 2023.

Despite claiming physical retail remains a key component of its strategy, the tech titan's convenience stores have struggled to maintain a foothold, falling from about 30 stores at their zenith down to 16 currently, according to C-Store Dive. The Woodland Hills Amazon Go, known for its range of grab-and-go options and a made-to-order kitchen, will cease operations on February 26, with all 10 of its employees set to be let go by March 10.

While Amazon Go stores have been closing, the company's grocery sector initiatives, such as Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods, remain in motion. Amazon Fresh has passed the 50-store mark and Whole Foods has seen steady growth since its acquisition by Amazon in 2017. While struggling with physical storefronts, Amazon's Just Walk Out technology has gained traction in over 200 third-party retail locations across various countries, as noted by an Amazon spokesperson in an interview with C-Store Dive
