The Brand Library & Art Center is gearing up for the spring season with the return of Art Talks at Brand, where contemporary artists are set to dish about their creative processes and the broader issues their works address. Spearheading the conversation series is Brand staff member, artist, and writer Jennifer Remenchik, who will be moderating Q&A sessions post-talk. The series kicks off with Los Angeles-based artists Roksana Pirouzmand, Shana Hoehn, Miguel Nelson, and Nick Aguayo, marking the event as a critical platform for artistic discourse, open to anyone and everyone at zero cost.
Roksana Pirouzmand started off the series yesterday, unfolding the layers of her multidisciplinary art which delves into themes of transformation and interaction. In her work, she is known to seamlessly blend performance art with other mediums including sculpture and installation. Her pieces are personal, yet expansive, often reflecting on the potential for change and decay through the interplay of artist and artifact. According to the City of Glendale news release, Pirouzmand holds a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts and an MFA from UCLA, with her art making rounds in galleries far and wide, from Southern California to China.
Following Pirouzmand, Shana Hoehn will take the stage on March 6 to discuss her sculptural and drawing work. Hoehn's artistic narrative is one steeped in the exploration of agency, embodiment, and the transformation of women's bodies. According to her curriculum, she's all about combining the old and the new—melding traditional crafting with digital tech to create something quite out of the ordinary. Her educational background is equally impressive, boasting an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Sculpture and Extended Media, as well as a BFA in Painting from Maryland Institute College of Art.
The third talk, scheduled for March 20, will showcase the talents of Miguel Nelson, a jack-of-all-trades in the realm of art and design. He's been dabbling and creating in social and experimental spaces for over two decades and is currently fixated on a unique project, "The Spirit of Rudy Caballero". According to an official statement, this venture invites fellow artists to collaborate under the moniker of the fictional character. His portfolio spans presentations at international fairs like Frieze New York, and he is no stranger to event spaces and urban revivals.
Finally, on May 1, the stage will belong to Nick Aguayo, whose abstract paintings are a masterful display of texture and form. Known to dramatically layer his materials, Aguayo's style is a dance of transparency and concealment, nodding to collage techniques while building up the surface with impasto, marble dust, and a palette of erasure. He's a UCLA grad with an MFA from the University of California, Irvine and has the clout to match—with pieces in The Bronx Museum and the Palm Springs Art Museum, according to Brand Library's announcement.
