A fire erupted in a Bronx apartment building yesterday, injuring six people, with firefighters executing a dramatic rescue to save a young girl and others. The blaze began around noon at 3514 Rochambeau Ave, igniting the third floor before greedily climbing to the fourth and fifth stories of the six-story structure, officials said.
According to a statement obtained by ABC7NY, the fire demanded the response of nearly 140 fire and EMS personnel, who valiantly battled the flames with five hose lines. The American Red Cross has stepped in to support 19 adults and eight children who are now displaced.
Among the injured were three civilians with serious yet non-life-threatening injuries, two other civilians, and one firefighter who suffered minor wounds, as reported by the FDNY. The young girl, who sustained serious injuries from smoke inhalation, was discovered on the fifth floor and had to be transferred to the roof due to the engulfing smoke making a normal exit untenable, per a report from NY Daily News. She, along with the other two seriously injured residents, were reported to be in stable condition following the ordeal.
Natalie Betances, whose mother narrowly escaped the inferno, lost her father to cancer a year back and was gripped by the fear of loss once more. Betances told ABC7NY of the critical importance of salvaging her late father's ashes from their imperiled home. In a parallel thread of bravery, tenant Jose Manon re-entered the building to rescue a neighbor's child, subsequently ending up in the hospital due to smoke inhalation.
The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated.
