The Town of Carrboro, NC, is currently hosting a series of events in honor of Black History Month, with a full calendar aimed at celebrating the contributions and history of Black Americans. These activities are designed to engage Carrboro residents in a variety of cultural and educational experiences that highlight Black excellence, struggle, and the ongoing pursuit of equality.
Significant among the February offerings is a presentation by Dr. Michelle Laws, a noted advocate for social justice, and James Shields Jr., the manager of the African American Cultural Arts and History Center. According to the Town of Carrboro's announcement, the event titled "African Americans and Labor" will be held today, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Carrboro Century Center, bringing insight into the intersection of race and labor from historical and contemporary perspectives.
A cultural treat is in store for the community on February 16 with "Conversations Between Four Black Music Makers Who Helped Bring About Abolition." The concert, as detailed on the Town of Carrboro's announcement, will not just be a musical journey, but also a deep dive into the narratives of abolitionists such as Solomon Northrup and Frederick Douglass, facilitated through an immersive program blending music, theater, and visual arts.
Health and wellness take center stage on February 22, offering the Carrboro community free health screenings and wellness education. The event promises to serve all ages, concluding with a puppet show by Tarish Pipkins, also known as Jeghetto, on February 23. Pipkins, who has previously collaborated with artists like Missy Elliott, will present "Real American History: by Jim Crow the Puppet" at The Drakeford Library Complex. The performance is aimed to enlighten both children and adults on segments of American history. Additionally, at 4 p.m. on the same day, the Carrboro Century Center will host Emmanuel Howard, a talented young musician who's making waves in the local music scene and is set to debut his self-produced album later in the year, as per the town's announcement.
The events organized by the Carrboro Recreation, Parks & Cultural Resources Department aim to promote understanding and appreciation of Black history and its impact on society today. To support the educational and inclusive nature of these events, the department has made additional resources and information available on their Black History Month webpage.
