The search for a new superintendent to helm the Clark County School District has been narrowed down to four candidates, a crucial step in filling the void left by the departure of Dr. Jesus Jara. The finalists include a mix of professionals with both local and non-local connections, who were selected to advance after a rigorous round of deliberations by the CCSD board.
According to News3LV, Dr. John Anzalone, Dr. Jesse Welsh, Nevada State High School CEO, and Nevada State Superintendent Jhone Ebert who served in CCSD in various capacities are among the frontrunners, joined by Ben Shuldiner, the current superintendent of Lansing School District. Anzalone and Ebert, in particular, received a notable degree of support during the public comments at the board meeting, with community leaders expressing a preference for candidates that offer pre-existing relationships with the legislature and the community to commence the district's healing process; yet not all members of the community found themselves persuaded by the commitment to local familiarity, suggesting instead a need for a superintendent to hit the ground running to make informed decisions, to build upon past successes, and to innovate without the necessity to learn the district from the ground up.
During the meeting, which FOX5 Vegas covered, some attendees left early, voicing that the board had initially become sidetracked while screening the candidates. Despite such obstacles, consensus was eventually reached, seeing Dr. Welsh added to the final list in a round of trustee votes.
Final interviews are slated on Monday, February 24, and on Tuesday, February 25 in public meetings, with further interviews scheduled for March 10 and 11 during community forums that will include parents and students, this collective process aims to ensure that all stakeholders have the opportunity to weigh in on the candidates before a final decision is reached; the Board of Trustees is set to make their selection on March 13.
