In a move that reshapes the political landscape of Cleveland, City Council Majority Leader Kerry McCormack has announced he will not be seeking reelection come November. McCormack, who has represented Ward 3 since 2016, expressed his gratitude in a video shared on social media platforms, saying via Spectrum News 1, "There is no greater privilege than being elected by the people in the community that you love."
During his tenure on the council, McCormack has held the position of majority leader since January 2022, as reported by Spectrum News 1. His decision not to pursue reelection was made public on Friday, aligning with statements citing a desire to "pursue other opportunities." McCormack's tenure has seen accomplishments such as support for the West Side Market's ongoing renovation, efforts that he is particularly proud of, according to a Cleveland.com interview, achieved through his involvement on the board of directors for the nonprofit now overseeing the market's refurbishment.
The councilman's decision comes ahead of Cleveland's latest round of redistricting, which has carved his Ward 3 into three new seats. Despite the changes, McCormack was anticipated to maintain a strong support base in the new Ward 7, a development highlighted in a statement obtained by WKYC. The new ward configuration takes areas further west into its boundaries while relinquishing some of downtown.
McCormack's imminent departure from Cleveland's City Council will undoubtedly shape the election landscape for November. As the community looks toward a future without one of its long-standing leaders, McCormack's work on transportation, community development, and public safety will remain an integral part of his legacy and a benchmark for those aspiring to continue in his stead.
