As the engines rev up for International Snowmobile Ride Day and the start of Take a Friend Snowmobiling Week, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) are doubling down on their efforts to promote safety in the snowy backcountry. According to CPW, these initiatives not only aim to ignite a shared enthusiasm for snowmobiling across the powdery Colorado landscapes but also to underscore the critical significance of avalanche awareness.
With snowmobiling participation on the rise, evidenced by the increase from 28,256 snowmobile registrations in 2023 to 29,434 in 2024, CPW highlights the importance of staying informed and prepared. Despite, the enticement of the pristine backcountry, CAIC Director Ethan Greene, as obtained by CPW said, "Snowmobiling is a fantastic way to experience Colorado’s backcountry, but as more people head into avalanche terrain, we must ensure they have access to the right safety resources."
The authorities are offering tools to help riders navigate the risks, including providing real-time avalanche forecasts and warnings through the Colorado Trail Explorer (COTREX) app. This app extension, a collaborative effort between CPW and CAIC announced earlier this season, integrates critical safety information making it easily accessible for snowmobilers as they plan their outings.
Educational efforts are also ramping up. During the Take a Friend Snowmobiling Week, CAIC's Snowmobile Outreach Coordinator will present on avalanche safety at the Colorado Snowmobile Association (CSA) Convention, as reported by CPW. Moreover, throughout the week, staff and an interactive avalanche safety trailer will be set up at various popular snowmobile trailheads to engage directly with the community. Safety tips shared with riders include: planning routes based on current avalanche conditions, adapting plans to changes in the weather and snowpack, carrying essential rescue gear, traveling smartly in avalanche terrain, and submitting field reports post-ride to aid CAIC in their forecasting.
Greene encapsulates the aim of these coordinated efforts with a focus on the community spirit of the sport, "We love seeing people introduce their friends to snowmobiling, and we want those rides to be fun and safe," he said, as per CPW.
